Do Face Masks Actually Work?

While out and about or doing your shopping, you are likely to see many people wearing masks in order to protect themselves from the Covid-19 virus. But how much are these masks actually helping?

The World Health Organisation has made it clear that masks will only be effective if used correctly, or if it's the right type of mask. Masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water. If you wear a mask, then you must know how to use it and dispose of it properly.

If you are healthy, then a mask is not necessary unless you are caring for, or are in contact with, someone who may have the virus.

If you aren't used to wearing a mask it can actually be more of a hindrance than a help, as it causes you to touch your face more frequently; an activity that may put you at risk.

Before putting on a mask, you should clean your hands thoroughly, and to take off the mask remove it from behind without touching the front, and discard immediately in a closed bin before once again cleaning hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

Surgical masks and N95 respirators are the only types of masks that have been proven effective in stopping exposure to viruses. Homemade fabric masks may actually put you more in danger. They can get very damp and moist, and the moisture will breed pathogens. If people don’t wash these masks regularly or well enough, that could increase the risk of infection.
