MetService Severe Thunderstorm Watch
Issued at 8:19am Mon 30 Jan 2023
Area: Northland
Valid: 2 hours 30 minutes from 8:30am Mon 30 Jan to 11:00am Mon 30 Jan
A front moves west over Northland this morning. Thunderstorms are possible with this front, some of which may be SEVERE. Regardless of whether thunderstorms occur or not, there is the possibility of localised downpours, with intensities of 25 to 40 mm per hour.
Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.
Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.
Expect thunderstorms or downpours to ease from the east this morning.
Note: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. People in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and monitor for possible Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.
