The new pedestrian bridge at Kōwhai Park is now open, making it safer and easier to walk or cycle to the Warkworth Community Transport Hub, Warkworth Showgrounds, and surrounding bush tracks.
Construction on the project began in January and was completed last week. The 380-metre shared walkway includes a 300-metre concrete path and an 80-metre elevated timber boardwalk and bridge that spans a steep gully and floodplain.
Rodney Local Board chair Brent Bailey says walkways and cycleways are a top priority for the board and the local community, especially in fast-growing towns like Warkworth.
“People often tell us they want to be able to walk and cycle safely—especially children travelling to and from school,” says Bailey. “The new shared path in Kōwhai Park offers all this and more. It’s suitable for walkers, cyclists, and prams, with no steps or steep sections.”
The elevated bridge reaches up to six metres above ground level at its highest point, offering scenic views of native bush and birdlife above and between the tree canopy.
Whether you're heading to sports, catching a bus, or just enjoying a bush walk, the new route offers a peaceful, practical and safer alternative to the busy State Highway 1.
You can access the walkway from 80 Great North Road or Heritage Lane in Warkworth.
Come and check out your new path through the park — perfect for an easy stroll, bike ride, or family outing.
