Police are yet to find three remand prisoners on the run after escaping from a prison van on Auckland's Southern Motorway.

The prisoners got out near the Ellerslie-Panmure off-ramp yesterday afternoon while their van was heading to Mt Eden prison and then stole a member of the public's car.

Police are now appealing to the public for help to find the trio - Zane Hepi, 24, Billy Fepulea'i, 43, and Joseph Ng Wun, 45.

A "dedicated" team of officers was working on the search, police said.

"The men have connections across Counties Manukau and Auckland City.

"The men are considered dangerous and should not be approached - however, if you see them police urge you to call 111 immediately."

Information can also be given anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

The Department of Corrections has launched a review into how the prisoners escaped.
