Omaha Sanctuary Fence To Be Moved

A section of the Omaha Beach shorebird sanctuary fence will have to be moved to prevent damage from the shifting sand below it.

“You will no doubt be aware of the ongoing erosion eating away at the dunes in front of the eastern end of the sanctuary predator fence”, said Aaron Pickering from the Auckland Council.

“The erosion and dune removal is now compromising the integrity of the fence in this area.

“We have been working closely with the Omaha Shorebird Protection Trust but wanted to inform the resident body of the project.

“The necessary consents and approvals are now in place to enable a small retreat to be undertaken.”

The works are scheduled to start during the first week of August and involve fence realignment, the removal of the older section of the fence, and follow up planting and infilling of the dunes.

The work is expected to take one to two weeks to complete but may be extended slightly depending on the trapping requirements the trust wants to undertake.
