You may remember last year being asked to submit an opinion on lowering speed limits in certain parts of Rodney. The public have spoken, and from June 30, 2020, the new speed limits will come into force by law.

A bylaw allows Auckland Transport (AT) to set safe and appropriate speeds on roughly 700km of roads in areas which pose the greatest safety risk to people. The roads where speeds will be reduced have been selected because they have been identified by AT to be high risk, have high crash rates, or the speed limit is unsuitable due to the road being winding, hilly or having unsegregated lanes. Rodney was one of the areas with the most changes. 

There were 54 deaths and 595 people seriously injured on Auckland Roads in 2018. One of the most effective ways of minimising road trauma involves reducing vehicle speeds, which is what AT is hoping to achieve with the bylaw. Speed determines both the likelihood of a crash occurring and the severity of the outcome.
