Downer, our contractors, along with community volunteers (including Friends of Mangawhai Community Park) will be knocking back pest plants in Mangawhai Community Park.
The volunteers will be supported by the Piroa-Brynderwyn Conservation Group and Northland Regional Council. With their combined efforts, rampant weeds such as wild ginger, woolly nightshade, wattle, pampus grass, and more, will soon be a thing of the past.
This is a huge job and they’ll be tackling it in sections. After each section is completed they will settle into a maintenance programme. They’ve started by weeding around the entrances to the park.
The volunteers are also going to tackle the asparagus weed in the outer areas, not covered by the council maintenance contract.
We have contractors filling in to maintain the tracks within the Mangawhai Community Park and along Thelma Road and working on a plan for the wetland area.
We love the volunteers who support our public spaces across our district. Pest plants and animals are a big issue in our district and the more people who can pitch in, the easier it will be to get on top of them.
If you’re interested in getting involved in your community, keep an eye on this page as we will have more information about how to get involved.
Next time you’re out in the park, make a point of noticing the great work they’re doing and share the love!
