The stormy weather of Queen’s Birthday Weekend is expected to continue through today, before easing off for the end of the week.
Auckland has had a soggy few days, with the north of the city being impacted most. A total of 46mm of rain was recorded on Monday at Warkworth’s Mahurangi River and 41mm at Omaha.
A complex low-pressure system affecting northern New Zealand is expected to slowly move northwards this evening.
A strong wind warning is in place for Northland and strong wind watches continue for northern Auckland, including Great Barrier Island, and the Coromandel Peninsula.
Coastal inundation is possible about east coastal parts of Northland, Great Barrier Island and Coromandel Peninsula, through a combination of heavy easterly swell and high tides.
MetService forecaster Gerard Bellam said the bad weather offered some good news for Auckland’s dam levels, which are at about 49 per cent, compared with 77 per cent which is the level usually expected at this time of year.
