Police have confirmed one person died in a house fire in Whangateau last night.

The fire service received a call around 6.55 p.m. last night of a house fire on Birdsall Road. The cause of the fire has not yet been discovered, police will be making further inquiries today.

Leigh, Matakana and Warkworth fire crews were sent to fight the blaze. They encountered water shortages and had to source water from a nearby creek. One firefighter described flames as high as 30 metres. Thankfully, crews were able to subdue the fire by 8.30 p.m. and stop it from spreading onto surrounding bush.
