Warning for Pet Owners: Cyanobacteria Alert at Cement Factory Pond

A concerned pet owner has issued a warning after a distressing incident at the Cement Factory pond in Warkworth. During a routine visit with their beloved dog, they unknowingly encountered a hazard that led to severe health complications for their pet.

The owner shared that they did not see the small council’s warning sign about the presence of cyanobacteria in the pond, as it was obscured by someone standing in front of it. The sign advises both people and pets to stay out of the water due to the toxic algal bloom.

Unfortunately, their dog went swimming as usual, resulting in symptoms of poisoning shortly thereafter. The pet is now receiving critical care at the Animal Referral Centre in Albany, incurring costs of at least $1000 per night.

The owner has expressed their concern, urging that the pond be closed entirely, rather than relying on a single, easily missed warning sign.

They also raised questions about the potential impact of cyanobacteria on human health, emphasising their anxiety over their pet’s condition.

Due to water quality issues, Auckland Council have put up this sign warning against swimming in the Old Cement Works Lake.

Pet owners are advised to exercise extreme caution and heed any posted warnings to prevent similar incidents.
