After a small great white was discovered on Omaha beach earlier this week, today locals found a dead wallaby washed up just south of the Surf club.

Tragically, it looks as if the wallaby was carrying a joey in it's pouch.

It has not yet been confirmed where the wallaby has come from, however it is most likely that the animal was one of many found at Kawau Island.

Wallabies were introduced to Kawau Island by Sir George Grey, who was a British soldier that eventually became Governor of New Zealand.

From around 1860 to 1870, four different species were introduced to the island by Sir George. These are the dama wallaby, the white throated wallaby, the brush tailed wallaby and the swamp wallaby.

Considered pests, DOC works hard to manage the wallaby numbers on Kawau island. They unfortunately have a negative impact on the native forest and ecosystem found on the island.

If you need to report sick, injured or dead wildlife please phone the Department of Conservation on 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468)
