We are all looking forward to the days that we can catch up with friends after the lockdown, but there may be more to look forward to than that.
Conditions this season have made for some great grape growing, which will in turn lead to great wine. What better way to celebrate when we are allowed out of our bubbles?
We spoke with Christine from Brick Bay Wines to see what will be in store for us.
“Vintage 2020 will be long remembered for a number of reasons - naturally the Covid19 pandemic - but on the bright side, a long hot dry summer leading into a spectacular harvest. Also, the rain kindly held off until the fruit was safely in the winery and fermentation was underway.

“The lockdown presented challenges, but NZ Winegrowers provided detailed instructions on how businesses could become registered as essential and the steps to be taken to ensure all employees were safe and the spread of the virus halted. At Brick Bay, we had a small team of international backpackers living on site in one bubble to hand harvest the fruit, before a number left on repatriation flights home to France.
“We’re looking forward to the time when we can properly celebrate a superb vintage with wine, food and good company.”
Hopefully that time comes soon; we cannot wait to crack open a bottle.
