A message from Waka Kotahi:
Our teams are working as fast and safely as they can to get State Highway 1 over the Brynderwyns reopened. We know that this route is a crucial connection to and from Northland for both freight and people, so getting it reopened is a priority. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this.
You can see the scale of the damage our crews are facing, and why work is so challenging. There are multiple slips to clear, including two large overslips (above the road) and another two underslips (beneath it). We're still experiencing ongoing hill movement, and there's a lot of material to clear, including a lot of loose material above the largest slip where we need to work from the top down.
Our roads remain vulnerable due to the amount of rainfall we’ve had, and there's still a risk of slips or trees falling on the road throughout Northland.
