NEMA has lifted the national advisory for the North and South Islands, however, it says a beach and marine threat remains in place for the Chatham Islands.
It says strong and unusual currents will continue for the next 20 to 48 hours.
Authorities have been reviewing the tsunami threat created by the huge earthquake off Russia two days ago.
Beach and marine tsunami conditions were observed across the east coast of New Zealand last night, but they have now subsided to strong and unusual currents.
There will be another update on the Chathams around 2pm.
