A car accident on Omaha Flats Road left Omaha beach residents with no power on Sunday afternoon.
At around 12:50 p.m. emergency services arrived on the scene of the accident. A single car had hit a power pole just past the Matakana fire station. The downed lines blocked the road, halting traffic in and out of Omaha and Point Wells.
According to a witness, “the driver looked OK and was being seen to by emergency services.” The car was badly damaged in the impact.
By 2.00 p.m., traffic was moving through the area again but was being directed slowly past the crashed car. Vector received news of the downed line immediately and sent a response team. However, due to the amount of damage to the line, power was still out at 4.00 p.m., with no estimate of when it might be on again.
The outage affected both the northern and southern ends of Omaha, as well as businesses in the area: the Omaha Beach Cafe and Eatery was forced to close early.
