What have you got planned today?
Perched high above the Pacific Ocean with sweeping views and a soundtrack of crashing waves below, the Mangawhai Cliff Walk is one of Northland’s most spectacular coastal treasures and it’s right here on our doorstep.
A favourite with early morning walkers, nature lovers, and weekend road-trippers, this 4.5km loop track offers more than just exercise; it offers a moment of pause, perspective, and pure beauty. With its mix of dramatic cliff tops, native bush, and secluded coves, the walk showcases the best of Mangawhai’s natural charm.
Starting from Mangawhai Heads Surf Club, the track meanders along the beach before climbing through shaded pōhutukawa groves and up onto soaring cliffs. From here, panoramic views stretch far across Bream Bay to the Hen and Chicken Islands an unbeatable photo opportunity, especially at sunrise.
Depending on your pace, the full loop takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours, returning via the beach at low tide. For a shorter walk, you can simply head out to the first viewing point and back, taking in a dose of coastal serentity without the full climb.
Along the way, keep an eye out for native birds such as tūī and kererū, and in the warmer months, the cliffs burst into life with flowering pōhutukawa. For those who appreciate geology, the coastal formations reveal fascinating stories carved by wind and sea over millennia.
After your walk, refuel with coffee or brunch at one of Mangawhai Heads’ popular cafes, or take a dip at the surf beach to cool down. It’s the perfect way to combine adventure and leisure a true Mangawhai ritual.
Whether you’re a weekend visitor or a local rediscovering your backyard, the Mangawhai Cliff Walk offers a fresh reminder of the wild beauty we’re lucky to call home. Make it part of your seasonal plans and don’t forget to bring your camera.
