Local Snells Beach resident Steve Hathaway has been internationally recognised with the win, as he contributed exciting footage to the documentary.

Steve has been on the lookout for orca for months now, trying to capture these magnificent creatures on film. He successfully recorded the moment an orca became entangled in a cray pot line and the moment he and his fellow divers managed to free the whale.

Voiced by Sigourney Weaver and directed by James Cameron, who's previous films include the colossal box office hits- The Titanic, Avatar and The Terminator (just to name a few! this is an incredible recognition.

Steve has also contributed to documentaries on BBC, National Geographic, Discovery Channel and TVNZ. He has founded Young Ocean Explorers, which aims to educate children and teach them more about our oceans! Read more about their mission here

Steve is asking for any sightings of orca around Mahurangi and the Hibiscus Coasts to be reported to 0800 FILM UW.
