A large shark was found on Omaha Beach just 100 meters from the Surf Club yesterday. It is speculated that the shark washed up onto the beach however this has not yet been confirmed.

The shark has now been taken to Massey University to undergo a necropsy, after members of the general public phoned DOC. Ngati Mahuhiri would like to thank Te Papa Atawhai, Omaha Surf Life Saving, and the members of the general public that helped move Mangatawhiri off the beach yesterday morning.

The shark was gifted the name Mangatawhiri by Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust chairman, Terrence 'Mook' Hohneck. Ngāti Manuhiri says Mangatawhiri is the traditional name for Omaha, with Manga referring to the bay and Tāwhiri referring to the wind.
