Routine testing on shellfish have detected Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning toxin levels above the safe limit of 0.8mg/kg set by MPI.
A public health warning has been issued for the Orewa/Warkworth area of the North Island between Takatu Point on the Tāwharanui Peninsula and south to Hauroa Point on Whangaparoa Peninsula.
This warning includes Mahurangi Harbour, Kawau Island and the smaller islands west of Kawau Island.
Do not collect or eat shellfish from this area. Please note that cooking the shellfish does NOT remove the toxin. If anyone becomes ill after eating shellfish from an area where a public health warning has been issued:
• Phone Healthline for advice on 0800 61 11 16, or seek medical attention immediately
• Advise your nearest public health unit
• Keep any leftover shellfish for testing.
