**UPDATE** 06/12 10:25am
DOC has been to the site at Onerahi but couldn’t spot the whale from land. They will now head out on the water for a closer look.
If you see any signs of the whale, please report it to 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468).
The Department of Conservation (DOC) has received reports of a marine mammal stranding at Onerahi, Whangārei. While initial reports suggested a whale, other sources indicate it could be a dolphin.
DOC staff and Project Jonah are en route to assess the situation. At this time, no additional assistance is required, but we will provide updates if this changes.
This is also a great time to highlight that Project Jonah offers Marine Mammal Medic courses, training volunteers to help rescue stranded marine life.
