After years of community mahi, generosity and sheer determination, the Coastal Trail has reached another major milestone — the long-awaited section linking Point Wells to Matakana is now complete.

This Sunday, 23 November 2025, the public is invited to celebrate the official opening of the new trail with a community event at Matakana Country Park. The Coastal Trail team is encouraging everyone to arrive by bike or on foot and be part of the first community ride (or walk) along the new pathway.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 10.30am, followed by a relaxed morning of festivities. Attendees can expect live music, food, face painting, and spot prizes for the best-dressed riders — so dressing up yourself, your bike or your helmet is very much encouraged.

This newest section of trail has been years in the making, driven by locals and built for locals. It represents another step in opening up safe, scenic, and accessible connections across the region.

Planning is already underway for the next leg of the project, which will take the trail from Matakana Village through to Sharp Road — another important link in the Coastal Trail network.
