After some speculation as to what would become of the property on the corner of Jones Road and Omaha Flats Road, it seems that it is set to become home to 45 storage units.
Locals aren't happy about this, worried that the units will be an eyesore and ruin the scenic value of Omaha. Auckland Council provided no information on this facility to residents before the project started.
The storage units we approved by council as a non-notified resource consent. If the council determines under the step-by-step process that the application does not need to be publicly discussed, then the application can proceed on a non-notified basis, with no public input or mitigation.
Council is required to notify the public only if the applicant requests they do so, there is a rule or national environmental standard that requires it be publicly notified, or the proposed activity has adverse effects that are more than minor.
Other non-notified consent projects in our area include The Grange in Warkworth, and the Boat House Bay development in Snells Beach, where 33 units were built in a critical area for threatened shore birds.
