The application for a liquor license for the proposed Super Liquor Matakana has been withdrawn, a week before the hearing was supposed to take place.
Many locals had voiced their disappointment in another liquor shop in Matakana, considering it surplus to requirements. There is already a locally owned liquor store, as well as multiple bars and restaurants that serve alcohol in the area.
On April 8th of this year, the following licensing notice appeared in the Rodney Times:
“G1 and Co. Ltd has made an application to the district licensing committee at Auckland for the issue of an Off Licence in respect to the premises situated at 1A/44 Matakana Valley Road.
“The general nature of the business to be conducted under the licence is a Super Liquor Matakana.”
A group of locals was set to object to the license at a hearing to be held on August 16th, but will no longer be going ahead.
‘A fantastic community effort here - just goes to show, voices matter and we don't have to accept what we know is not good for the community. Well done everyone who submitted and helped achieve this result”, one local posted to the Matakana Community Facebook group.
