A scrub fire near the Newton Road overbridge in central Auckland closed a section of the citybound motorway for several hours overnight.

Fire and Emergency says about 40 firefighters attended the fire and put it out from the motorway.

They were called just after midnight and the fire was extinguished by 3am.

Both the overbridge and the motorway have reopened.

Fire and Emergency says there was been some damage to the bridge.
