A fire in a 100-year-old pōhutukawa tree, that has been burning for more than two days, has been finally put out yesterday.
The fire began late on New Year's Eve at Martin's Bay, in Mahurangi East, and was thought to be caused by fireworks.
A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said one crew member and a tanker remained at the site overnight and into this morning.
Northeasterly winds were fanning the flames under the tree's exposed roots but the pōhutukawa was unable to be cut down as it was near the edge of a cliff, with a house below, they said.
The fire had been extinguished and the crew left about 10.30am, the spokesperson said.
No FENZ investigation into the fire and its cause was likely to take place.
