Devich Road Bridge update
Council staff and contractors have been working on solutions to repair or replace Devich Road bridge, which was damaged in the 24 February extreme weather event. Three out of the four retaining walls of the bridge suffering major structural damage, leaving the road at the approaches to the bridge at a risk of collapse. In its current condition it is extremely unsafe and remains closed to traffic and pedestrians.
Recent geotechnical ground investigations completed in the last week of July and early August have shown that the current bridge is repairable. This is good news, but we will need to undertake further site assessments to finalise the strengthening work. We are already in discussion with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to receive a higher subsidy for this repair (82%), to ease the burden on ratepayers.
We anticipate getting the work completed before the end of this year, and will update you once we have a confirmed programme of works.
