Dome Landfill To Go Ahead As Planned

Despite relentless opposition, Waste Management remains committed to its plans for a landfill in the Dome Valley.

Auckland Council, Kaipara District Council, Department of Conservation, Forest and Bird, among others, have all voiced their opposition, and it has been made very clear by locals that there is very little support for this project in the community.

In July, Ngāti Whātua ki Kaipara and the wider community of Dome Valley marched through central Auckland to oppose the proposed landfill.

The main concern surrounding the dump is the adverse environmental effects it may have. The area where it will be constructed is prone to heavy rainfall and flooding. Floodwaters may be contaminated by the landfill, wrecking the immediate environment and ultimately flowing into and polluting the Kaipara Harbour.

In direct contrast, a spokesperson from Waste Management has said that “any adverse effects relating to flooding and natural hazards will be no more than minor and acceptable”.

“We believe it is possible to resolve the ecological concerns raised and are committed to doing so.”
