Parents are being encouraged to talk with their children and teenagers about safety after a frightening incident in Warkworth last week.
An 11-year-old boy was walking to school on Blue Gum Drive when he was approached by a male thought to be in his 20s. The man tried to grab the boy, but thanks to his quick reactions, the brave youngster was able to punch the offender before running off.
Police were notified, as were the local schools. Teachers and staff have spoken to pupils and sent information home to parents to warn them of any potential dangers.
The man was described as a white male in his early 20s, with blonde hair. He was dressed in black except for red shoes and possibly had a tattoo on his left wrist hand area resembling Maori/tribal art.
It is important for kids to know what to do if they find themselves in a similar situation. If approached or grabbed by someone that they don't know, we should teach all youngsters to yell and scream and do whatever they can to draw attention to themselves, and to strike the person if possible. If children walk to school or anywhere else, when possible, walking with a group rather than going alone can be a good choice.
