Following a truck blocking the road between Mangawhai and Waipu yesterday, Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group Controller Graeme MacDonald has used the powers available under the current state of emergency to direct that all truck and trailer units are restricted from using the Waipu Cove Road between Mangawhai and Waipu.
This gives Northland Police additional powers to enforce the use of this route.
The Northern Transportation Alliance and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency - Northland are working together to implement traffic management.
Freight companies are being contacted directly.
Currently Brynderwyns are closed due to severe slips. Light vehicles can use the Waipu/Langs beach route to bypass Brynderwyns to get further north. Trucks and trailers need to use the alternative route through Dargaville as the Waipu route is too narrow and winding for larger vehicles. Heavy vehicles must use SH12 and SH14 via Dargaville with caution.
Please note Waipu Gorge road is closed.
