“ Our darling dutchess Shirl passed away in her sleep this morning in her 94th year. She has been surounded by our loving ‘Sitting with Shirl’ friends and I am so grateful to these incredible carers at Riverside Residential care, Maungaturoto who tenderly took care of her every need. She passed with mana and aroha - You know who you are and I love you all.

Mama Shirl, im going to bloody miss you❣️

You tread the stage boards with this young actress and inspired me with your talent, impecible comic timing, velvet voice and potty mouth. 

You told the little sisters of the Poor that I was pregnant under my nun habit.

You cut Eliza’s cord and gave her an inny.

You brought Jann to me so you gave us David and Rosie

You loved all the dogs in the world

And were Lottie’s loving seeing human person.

You listened with wise discernment to my every frustration and gave me firm guidance.

I am so grateful and proud to have been the daughter you never had.

Oh and that big screaming match we had at Carey’s Bay Pub that day… you were right Shirl - Shakespeare does lose its magic when translated in Te Reo Māori.  Your loving friend, Julie.
