A fantastic walk along Wonderview Road Esplanade and the stunning pōhutukawa-fringed coastline of Leigh, with spectacular sea views.
Start at Lax Crescent, where street parking is available.
The track along the elevated coastline has paved, gravel, boardwalk and grass sections - as well as a few rocky points to navigate. Watch out for a short section of the path next to an electric fence.
There are hills and a number of steps to climb on the route. Some steps are fairly steep and may pose a challenge for little ones.
From the main track there are optional walks down to two beaches, as well as great views to Omaha Bay and Daniels Reef (a popular surfing spot).
There are photo opportunities at almost every turn. You'll be rewarded with breathtaking views over Omaha, Tāwharanui Regional Park, Goat Island and Little Barrier (Hauturu). On a clear day you can see to Great Barrier (Aotea) and the Coromandel Peninsula.
There are seats along the way to admire the view and have a bite to eat to refuel. Look out for dolphins and whales which can be seen when the conditions are right.
The walk ends at Cotterell Street. Public toilets, a children's playground and a cafe are located in Leigh village.
