Charlies Gelato is more than an ice cream shop. We’re considered an institution in Matakana. Locals and tourists alike flock to Charlies to enjoy the gelato, sorbetto and seasonal fresh produce, made and grown on site.

Sit for a while to enjoy freshly roasted coffee and home baking in our cafe. During the summer months, stop by for our Italian-style wood-fired pizzas which can be enjoyed in our tranquil garden setting.

Gelato and Sorbetto

We make all of our award-winning gelato and sorbetto the same way the Italians do: from scratch, in very small batches. Over the past 10 years we’ve been developing a range of delectable new flavours in addition to the ‘old favourites’. With at least 40 flavours on display, the hardest part of your visit will be trying to choose which one to have!

Wood-fired pizzas

Charlies wood-fired pizzas are a summer holiday specialty. Just like our gelato, we make them the authentic Italian way. We prepare our own pizza dough from scratch in our kitchen, leaving it to proof overnight. Each summer morning we fire up the outdoor oven with local mānuka and start serving the freshest and tastiest traditional-style pizzas you will find. 

Charlies pizzas are only available during the summer school holidays, normally from mid-December through to February. 

In-Store

We grow blueberries, oranges, lemons, limes, figs and feijoas, all picked fresh and sold in our Wholefoods store when in season. The Wholefoods store is expanding to include fresh greens and other products sourced locally.
