Friends of Awa Matakanakana (FOAM) monitors the clarity of water at sample sites throughout the catchment that covers approximately 5000 hectares and includes the Matakana and Glen Eden Rivers and Sandspit estuary.
Volunteers also check things like water temperature and the numbers and types of macroinvertebrates and fish found in each stream. These critters can be a good indication of the health of a stream.
The data is forwarded to Waicare at Auckland Council.
With the help of FOAM and other, similar, community groups, the Council can take the necessary action to restore and protect the health of our local waterways.
FOAM welcomes new members. Depending on how much time you have available, you can become involved in the practical tasks such as water quality testing, and shellfish monitoring. FOAM especially welcome individuals with specific skills and/or experience who can help us to widen our activities so that we can more effectively meet our aims.
