Shellfish Monitoring at Sandspit Estuary 2025 with Friends of Awa Matakanakana (FOAM)

Shellfish Monitoring at Sandspit Estuary 2025 with Friends of Awa Matakanakana (FOAM)

Sun 30 Nov 2025, 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

26 Rosemount Road, Matakana 0985

8am-11am, Monday 1st December 2025

Give as much time as you can to help us count and measure the shellfish at Sandspit estuary.

Each year Friends of Awa Matakanakana volunteers collect data to better understand the state of the awa and estuary.

This year, a date clash has meant our regular young volunteers are unable to attend and we need the community to give us a hand.

All equipment will be provided, as well as guidance on the simple methodology.

Bring a buddy and work in pairs.

Counting shellfish provides an insight into the changes occurring in the rivers.

The dominant shellfish inhabiting Sandspit estuary are tuangi (cockles), and others include whelks, nutshells, pipi, wedge and horn shells.

Tuangi are filter feeders that help clean the estuary water and they are an important food for marine animals.

They are sensitive to pollution, rising water temperatures, overharvesting, and excessive sediment.

We will provide a sausage sizzle to thank you for your mahi.
